Sample objectives

First is a list of the subjects required by law, then a sample list of elementary and secondary objectives by subject area. PHEN recommends "open-ended" objectives, only 1 or 2 objectives (total) per subject.

This list may be copied or edited to suit your style.

    At the Elementary level the subjects required by law are:
  1. English, including Spelling, Reading, Writing
  2. Arithmetic
  3. Science
  4. Geography
  5. History of the United States and Pennsylvania
  6. Civics
  7. Safety Education, including dangers and prevention of fires
  8. Health and Physiology
  9. Physical Education
  10. Music
  11. Art
    At the Secondary level:
  1. English, including Language, Literature, Speech, Composition
  2. Science
  3. Geography
  4. Social Studies, including Civics, World History, History of the United States and Pennsylvania
  5. Mathematics, including General Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry
  6. Art
  7. Music
  8. Physical Education
  9. Health
  10. Safety Education, including dangers and prevention of fires
    Optional Secondary Subjects:
  1. Economics
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Foreign Languages
  5. Trigonometry

Sample of elementary objectives:
    English:
  • Read on a regular basis.
  • Explore the English language.
    Arithmetic:
  • Use math in real life.
  • Handle money in everyday situations.
    History of the United States and Pennsylvania:
  • Investigate US history.
  • Discuss PA historical topics as they relate to current events.
    Geography:
  • Explore geography of one or more of the 50 states.
  • Investigate geography of the globe.
    Civics:
  • Discuss current political events as interest the child.
  • Explore the structure of government.
    Science:
  • Explore the natural world.
  • Probe science topics of interest to the child.
    Safety Ed:
  • Discuss correct procedures in the event of a fire.
  • Discuss dangers of drugs.
    Health:
  • Discuss the dangers of tobacco and alcohol.
  • Investigate better nutrition.
    Art:
  • Encourage artistic endeavors.
  • Explore a variety of art mediums.
    Physical Ed:
  • Exercise as family sees fit.
  • Explore exercise options.
    Music:
  • Expose child to a variety of music.
  • Pursue child's musical interests.

  • Probe science topics of interest to the child.
    Geography:
  • Explore different geographic locations.
  • Exercise map skills.
    Social studies:
  • Discuss the workings of government.
  • Explore historical topics as they relate to current events.
    Mathematics:
  • Consider the importance of mathematical competence in everyday situations.
  • Manage money in everyday situations.
    Art:
  • Encourage artistic endeavors.
  • Explore a variety of art mediums.
    Music:
  • Expose child to a variety of music.
  • Pursue child's musical interests.
    Physical Ed:
  • Exercise as family sees fit.
  • Explore exercise options.
    Health:
  • Further discuss the dangers of tobacco and other drugs.
  • Investigate better nutrition.
    Safety Ed:
  • Discuss correct procedures in the event of a fire.
  • Further discuss dangers of alcohol, especially relating to driving.
